Quy Nhon is the quiet coastal city that Vietnamese travelers love and international visitors are only starting to discover. It has long city beaches, rocky coves, Cham towers and some of the best-value seafood in central Vietnam, and it is currently one of the most talked-about destinations in Asia.

Quick facts

Best time to visit
March–September is the drier season with calmer seas. Ky Co and Eo Gio are best from about April to September. October–February is wetter and stormier.
Getting there
Phu Cat Airport (UIH) is about 30 km northwest of the city, with direct flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The nearest train station is Dieu Tri, a short taxi ride away.
Getting around
Motorbike rental was listed around $5–10 a day. Grab and taxis work in the city; for beaches and islands, you will often need a boat or tour.
Minimum time needed
2 days for the city and one coastal day, 3–4 to add islands and Cham towers.
Rough daily budget
About $20–30/day on a budget, $45–70/day mid-range, not counting flights. These are estimates, so confirm prices.

1. Getting there and around

Vietnam Airlines lists direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City (about 1 hour, from roughly 830,000 VND) and Hanoi (about 1.5 hours, from roughly 1,314,000 VND). A taxi from the airport to the city takes about 30 minutes and costs around 250,000–300,000 VND; the airport shuttle bus is about 50,000 VND per person. Trains from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City stop at Dieu Tri.

2. Where to base yourself

  • City beach (Quy Nhon Bay) — the easiest base, with hotels, seafood restaurants and a long promenade.
  • Near Ghenh Rang / Queen's Beach — a rockier, quieter stretch about 3 km from the center.
  • Nhon Ly and Nhon Hai — fishing villages across Thi Nai Bridge with beach homestays; they are the gateway to Ky Co.
Pro tip Book the Ky Co boat for the morning, be back for a late seafood lunch, then catch the sunset from Eo Gio or the Thi Nai Bridge. It keeps the beach time before the wind picks up.

3. Ky Co, Eo Gio and the islands

Ky Co is the beach you will see in photos: white sand and clear water, usually reached by boat from Nhon Hai. One guide lists a 100,000 VND entry fee, so budget for it. Eo Gio, about 20 km from the center, is a windy cliff with a walkway and sunset views (a guide lists about 25,000 VND). Hon Kho island is around 20 minutes by canoe from Nhon Hai for snorkeling, and Cu Lao Xanh (Green Island) is a longer boat trip from the city. All of these are best on calm days, so check the forecast.

4. Cham towers and the city

Quy Nhon was once part of the Champa kingdom, and several Cham brick towers still stand around the city. The Banh It Cham Towers are about 15 km away on a hilltop with four remaining towers, and the Twin Towers are within the city. Add the long Thi Nai Bridge and a sunset at Nhon Hai fishing village for an easy half-day.

5. What to eat

  • Banh xeo tom nhay — small crispy pancakes with shrimp, usually 15,000–20,000 VND each.
  • Banh hoi chao long — rice vermicelli with a thick, savory porridge-style soup.
  • Bun ram — field-crab noodle soup.
  • Fresh seafood — crab, shrimp and fish at beachfront restaurants. Ask for prices before ordering.

6. Where it fits on a route

Quy Nhon works as a stop between Da Nang or Hoi An and Nha Trang, or as a short flight from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. If you only have a long weekend, it is a good alternative to the more crowded southern beaches. See our Da Nang guide for the northern leg.

7. A sample 3-day plan

  • Day 1: City beach morning, banh xeo tom nhay lunch, Ghenh Rang and Queen's Beach in the afternoon, seafood dinner.
  • Day 2: Boat to Ky Co and Hon Kho in the morning, Nhon Hai fishing village and Thi Nai Bridge for sunset.
  • Day 3: Eo Gio at sunrise or the Banh It Cham Towers, then head to the airport or train.

8. Common first-timer mistakes

  • Visiting islands in the stormy months — boats can be cancelled between October and February.
  • Relying on flights landing late — the airport is 30 km away and taxis get scarce at night.
  • Expecting nightlife like Da Nang — it is a quiet, local-feeling city.
  • Ordering seafood without a price — check the per-kilo price before it is cooked.
